A term that Seth used in his new book Linchpin.
What is emotional labour?
It is something that is not part of your Job Description (sadly enough), its something you would do to bring in X factor in what you do, its something you would without any expectation, to help others, to be an human being.
Seth says in his book...
"When you do emotional labour you benefit. Not just the company, not just your boss, but you. The act of giving someone a smile, of connecting to a human, of taking initiative, of being surprising, of being creative, of putting on a show- these are things that we do for free all our lives. And then we get to work ad we expect to merely do what we are told and get paid for it"
What can companies do to increase emotional labour?
Hire people who are pact with this quality and are willing to use it.
Encourage and reward such behaviour.
Give that extra space to employees to be human.
How would you use Emotional Labour to increase value?
